Kitchen Table Math • Track 15

Can I Ask You Something

A closing reflection that asks whether we are actually living, or only rushing, comparing, working, and worrying our way past the life already happening.

Where it came from

The final song began with questions instead of answers. When did we last stop without scrolling, working, or worrying? When did the sky become something we passed instead of something we saw?

Those questions led toward comparison — the habit of measuring an entire private life against selected moments from people we barely know. The pressure to be further ahead often arrives without anyone proving where ahead is supposed to be.

The song closes the album by creating space rather than resolving every problem.

What it means

Can I Ask You Something challenges the idea that a different timeline is a failed one. A road can take longer, turn differently, or remain unclear without making the person on it behind.

Most people are still figuring life out. Some simply hide the confusion more convincingly, especially online.

The real measure becomes personal: not whether you have reached someone else's marker, but whether you are living a life that feels like your own.

Core feeling

You may not be behind — you may simply be on a road that belongs only to you.

Full lyrics below

Can I ask you something Not a big question Just an honest one When was the last time You actually slowed down Not scrolling Not working Not worrying Just Being alive When was the last time You looked at the sky And didn't rush past it When was the last time You laughed so hard You forgot what time it was When was the last time You felt proud of yourself Without comparing your life To somebody else's And why do we do that anyway Why do we measure our lives Against people We barely even know Who told us That we're supposed to be Somewhere else by now And why did we believe them What if you're not behind What if you're just living A life that doesn't look Like everyone else's highlight reel What if the road you're on Is just Different Because the truth is Most people are still figuring it out They just hide the confusion A little better So maybe the real question isn't Why am I not further ahead Maybe it's Am I actually living The life I want And if the answer isn't clear yet That's okay Some roads take longer Before they start making sense
